Ideally your new square metre beds should face South to gain maximum sunlight but this is not absolutely critical. The general rule is as much sunlight as possible.
Site the beds clear of trees and shrubs where roots and shade may interfere. The area should have good drainage meaning there should be no puddles after heavy rain.
The ideal is to have four beds as this makes it easy to avoid growing the same crops in a bed year after year. Rotating crops around the beds helps to keep the yields high and avoids pest problems.
Beds need not be in a block of four, they could be in a line or even spread out around the garden.
